An emergency high level meeting has been called by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Writers' Buildings to review the worsening law and order situation in the state following clashes between Trinamool Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporters. The clashes are related to the alleged assault of the CPI (M) leader Rezzak Mollah, a former state minister, by TMC MLA Arabul Islam.

The meeting was called after a planned rally by the CPI (M) turned violent as their supporters and TMC workers clashed in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas. The meeting is being attended by the state chief and home secretaries as well as the state DGP and senior police officers. The CPI (M) is likely to meet the Governor at 6 pm on January 8 on this issue, claiming that they were attacked with bombs and firearms by Trinamool workers as they were en route to Kolkata for a party rally.

Thousands of Left supporters are headed for the South 24 Parganas district headquarters in Alipore for their protest demonstration. Vehicles carrying CPM supporters were allegedly stopped by Trinamool workers and then set on fire.
