Hindalco Industries delays commissioning of Odisha refinery to March

Hindalco Industries, the non-ferrous metals producer is likely to commission its 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) alumina refinery in Odisha by the end of March 2013. Earlier, the plant was scheduled to start operations in January, but has been delayed on the back of slow progress of project work.

The aluminium major's bauxite mining in the state, which was scheduled to start in October 2012, has also been delayed and may start by the end of January. The company initially aims to mine 4.3-4.4 mtpa of bauxite for the refinery, though it has permission to mine 8.5 million tonnes.

Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, is an industry leader in aluminium and copper. The company's aluminium units across the country encompass the entire gamut of operations from bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting to downstream rolling, extrusions, foils and alloy wheels, along with captive power plants and coal mines.
