In the wake of political instability after the collapse of Arjun Munda-led Bharatiya Janata Party-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) coalition government last week, Union Cabinet has recommended for imposition of President's Rule in Jharkhand.

The recommendation was made in the governor's second report to the central government following the resignation of Chief Minister Arjun Munda, who also sought the dissolution of the assembly after the JMM withdrew support to his government. The Governor had recommended President's rule in the state keeping the Jharkhand Assembly under suspended animation. The Union home ministry had earlier prepared a note on the basis of the report sent by the Governor, which was placed before the Cabinet.

The crisis in Jharkhand erupted on January 8 when the BJP's ruling coalition partner Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, in a letter to the Governor, formally withdrew its support to the 28-month-old government pushing it into a minority. The Cabinet had discussed the governor's report as well as the home ministry's note on the Jharkhand situation before taking the decision.
