Need to take ‘solid steps’ to ease the situation on price rise: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh admitted that UPA government did not handle the inflation properly and asserted the need to take 'solid steps' to ease the situation on price rise especially this year. While addressing the AICC session, the prime minister said that inflation has been 'one shortcoming in our record and during the UPA regime, the average rate of inflation has remained higher than we desired.

By adding further Singh said that the hike in the rates of petroleum products in the international market during the last eight years and the benefit extended to farmers by increasing the minimum support price for crops are the major reasons for the increase in inflation rate.

While, comparing UPA's performance with the predecessor NDA, Singh said that during the six years of NDA regime, the average growth rate was 5.8 per cent, while in the UPA's regime of eight year it increased to average 8.2 per cent per annum. By adding further, he said that UPA has fared better in improving agricultural growth and eliminating poverty.

Expressing views on corruption, the Prime Minister said that we understand the anger and difficulties of the common man on the issue. Citing measures including the removal of discretionary powers of public servants and use of latest technology, he said ‘we have taken several steps to improve transparency, accountability and check wrongdoings and also committed to the establishment of a strong lokpal bill in the hope that the attempt would be successful soon.
