With view to boost the production and income of the farmers, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an increase in minimum support price (MSP) for six rabi crops for the 2022-23 crop year (July-June) and the 2023-24 marketing season (April-March). MSP is the rate at which the government buys grain from farmers. Currently, the government fixes MSPs for 23 crops grown in both the Kharif and rabi seasons. Sowing of rabi (winter) crops begins in October, immediately after the harvest of kharif (summer) crops.

The absolute highest increase in MSP has been approved for lentil (Masur) at Rs 500 per quintal to Rs 6000 per quintal for Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2023-24 from Rs 5500 per quintal in RMS 2022-23. Followed by MSP for rapeseed & mustard hiked by Rs 400 per quintal to Rs 5450 per quintal for RMS 2023-24. For safflower, an increase of Rs 209 per quintal has been approved to Rs 5650 per quintal for RMS 2023-24. For wheat, a major rabi crop, MSP has been hiked by Rs 110 per quintal to Rs 2125 per quintal for RMS 2023-24 from Rs 2015 per quintal in RMS 2022-23. Similarly, for gram and barley an increase of Rs 100 per quintal, Rs 105 per quintal respectively has been approved.

The increase in MSP for Rabi Crops for Marketing Season 2023-24 is in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing the MSP at a level of at lease 1.5 times of the All-India weighted average Cost of Production, aiming at reasonably fair remuneration for the farmers.  The maximum rate of return is 104 percent for rapeseed & mustard, followed by 100 percent for wheat, 85 per cent for lentil; 66 per cent for gram; 60 per cent for barley; and 50 per cent for safflower.
