Sugar output rises 2.7% at 165.9 lakh tonnes in 2012-13 marketing year

For the current marketing year that started in October last year, India has produced 165.9 lakh tonnes of sugar up to February 15, 2013, an increase 2.70%, when compared to the same period last year. As per the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the increase in output is due to higher sugarcane crushing and better recovery.

Till date, almost 1680 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed with an average recovery of 9.8% from October 2012. The country has crushed about 1.70% more sugarcane than last year along with better recoveries. However, there are 24 less number of mills operating now as compared to last year.

Further, Maharashtra produced 57.8 lakh tonnes of sugar with 11% recovery, which is about 3% more than last year, whereas Uttar Pradesh produced 43.6 lakh tonnes of sugar from 120 mills under operation, which is about 4% lesser than last year same period. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are the two leading sugar producing States in the country.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have produced 7.8 lakh tonnes and 7.3 lakh tonnes, respectively, which is about 3% and 1% more than last year. Karnataka has produced about 28.3 lakh tonnes of sugar. However, ISMA has projected 243 lakh tonne of sugar production for the crushing season 2011-13, which is 20 lakh tons less than last year.
