21 Feb 2013 Evaluate

The Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) has finally given the nod to National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), for setting up of the 1,980 MW North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Plant in Jharkhand.

Besides, CCI has also agreed to restore the original coal linkage for the project that has been cleared for setting up in the vicinity of Tandwa town, district Chatra in Jharkhand. Earlier, the coal ministry had withdrawn the coal linkage for NTPC's Rs 14,000 crore project in 2008 and wanted its relocation to another site in the district, given that the proposed site was on potential six billion tonnes of coal reserves. The Coal Ministry in this regard has also earlier circulated a note to various ministries seeking their comments. It added the alternative site proposed near Kanhakala village in Jharkhand.

NTPC is the largest power generating company in the country. It has also diversified into hydro power, coal mining, power equipment manufacturing, oil & gas exploration, power trading & distribution.
