The government has decided to place the anti-rape Bill in the Parliament on 19 March, after most of the parties voiced their opinion against lowering the age of consent for sex from 18 years to 16. The decision on the age of consent for sex will be taken in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the anti-rape Bill.

The final draft of the anti-rape bill was cleared by the Union Cabinet last week. A stricter punishment for offences like stalking was included in the bill. Sustained stalking was made non-bailable offence.

As per some reports the government is not averse to the age of consent being 18. If a male above the age of 18 years has sexual intercourse with a girl lower than 16, it will be considered as rape and if a male lower than 18 years has sexual encounter, he will be charged with one time probation.  A key provision of the bill is that if the rape of a victim leads to her death or leaves her in a vegetative state, then it can attract death penalty. The minimum punishment is 20 years in jail. The quantum of punishment can be extended upto the natural life of the convict.
