Amidst growing clamour for Dutt's pardon, Press Council of India Justice Markandey Katju has said that he appealed for Sanjay Dutt's pardon in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case on humanitarian grounds and said that he wasn't questioning the Supreme Court verdict.

Sanjay Dutt is not a terrorist, said Katju adding that the actor hasn’t been found involved in a terror act, he was ‘only in possession of a weapon which he never used. Pitching for the actor, Katju said that Dutt has promoted Gandhian philosophy in the film Munnabhai and has already suffered enough.

The Supreme Court on Thursday announced its verdict in the 1993 Bombay blasts case and sentenced actor Sanjay Dutt to five years in jail under the Arms Act. The apex court found the actor guilty of acquiring illegal weapons from those blamed for the bombings in Mumbai that killed 257 people and was given four weeks to surrender.
