In order to be in the good books of the Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, the Cabinet is set to consider Rs 12,000 crore special package for the state on April 18 which will be routed through the Backward Region Grant Fund. Besides Bihar, a number of other states like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand and parts of Rajasthan would also qualify for the aid from the Centre.

Earlier Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had asked for Rs 20,000 crore allotment for Bihar. If approved then Bihar will get the funds over the next four years (remainder of the 12th plan) to spend on projects related to energy, water resources, environment and forests and construction of state highways and roads.

Last month a package was being worked on under which criteria for backwardness of a state is being framed. Nitish, who has been campaigning for special status for his state, held the Adhikar Rally in New Delhi earlier in March, to press his demand.
