Finance Minister P Chidambaram has assured more economic reforms programme in the remaining term of UPA-II, despite the rising political temperature. The finance minister for this has sought principal opposition party’s co-operation in pushing through crucial bills in the ongoing budget session, for protecting the reform process from any parliamentary logjam.

For the long awaited implementation of GST across the country, which up till now seemed to be far away realty, Finance Minister gave out of 70% chances of the indirect tax legislation getting passed in Parliament during the remaining tenure of around 13 months of the UPA-II.

The minister, who was able to build consensus on VAT during the UPA-I term, said the implementation of GST is possible, provided that Central Government and all the State governments, which are now ruled by eight-nine different political parties, build consensus.

Adding that India has potential to grow at an yearly pace of 8%, the Finance Minister stated that the government would take small but significant steps to ensure that the country achieve its potential. He said, that country’s two main political parties-the Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party-should work in harmony for pushing through reforms, including higher foreign direct investment (FDI) in insurance, passage of the land acquisition Bill and GST.
