Nifty ends near day’s low point on Thursday

09 Nov 2023 Evaluate

Indian equity benchmark -- Nifty -- ended Thursday’s trading session in negative terrain, dragged by losses in FMCG, IT and Consumer Durables stocks. After making a positive start, soon index turned volatile, as investors paid no attention towards the Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s statement that the government is looking at easing certain restrictions for units in the special economic zones (SEZ) to promote the sector's growth. SEZs in India are treated as foreign territories for trade and customs duties, with restrictions on duty-free domestic sales. Foreign fund outflows dented sentiments. The Provisional data from the National Stock Exchange showed that foreign institutional investors (FII) offloaded shares worth Rs 84.55 crore on November 8.

In last leg of trade, index added losses to end near day’s low point, as sentiments got hit, amid a private report stating that India's industrial growth likely cooled to 7.5 percent in September on account of some weakening of momentum in activity. According to a report, industrial growth - as per the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) - likely fell in September for the first time in three months, with high-frequency data indicative of a slowdown. Traders overlooked report that Moody's Investors Service retained India's economic growth forecast for 2023 at 6.7 per cent and said strong domestic demand will likely sustain the growth in the near term.

Traders were seen piling up positions in Realty, Auto and Healthcare stocks, while selling was witnessed in FMCG, IT and Consumer Durables. The top gainers from the F&O segment were Metropolis Healthcare, Power Finance Corporation and Mahindra and Mahindra. On the other hand, the top losers were Multi Commodity Exchange of India, National Aluminium Company and Samvardhana Motherson International. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 19400 - 19600 calls and 18900 - 19100 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.
