India’s aviation market finally has began to show signs of improvement, with domestic air passenger traffic expanding for the first time in 10 months, albeit slightly by 1.59% at 51.89 lakh in March from 51.08 lakh during the corresponding month of last year.

On a month-on-month basis the traffic grew by 6.07%, as the domestic airlines carried 51.89 lakh passengers in the month under review compared to 48.92 lakh passengers ferried in February, 2013. Air traffic was subdued in previous months as high fares and a slowing economy sapped demand. The rise in fares was partly because of the grounding of Kingfisher Airlines since October, which reduced the number of flights.

However, the overall passengers carried by domestic airlines during the first quarter of the calender year (Jan-Mar, 2013) showed a contraction of 2.78% at 152.12 lakh from the corresponding period of last year, when the passenger carrier’s ferried 156.47 lakh travelers.

In March this year, the market share of Jet Airways (India), including its subsidiary JetLite, declined to 23.8% from 25.4% in February. Air India improved to 20.2% from 18.9%, and GoAir to 8.1% from 7.8%. IndiGo and SpiceJet, maintained their market share at 27.4% and 20.4% respectively.
