Govt to provide LPG subsidy directly in bank accounts from Oct 1

Using the Aadhaar payment platform, the government is planning to provide subsidy to 14 crore LPG subscribers directly in their bank accounts from October 1, 2013. Similarly, it is also decided to launch Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for LPG throughout the country tentatively on the same date. To avail the facility, a consumer will have to get his or her bank account linked with Aadhaar number.

Currently, state-owned oil firms are selling domestic cooking gas at a highly subsidized rate of Rs 410.50 per 14.2-kg cylinder, which is half the market price and the difference is paid by the government in the form of subsidy to oil companies. Once the DBT for LPG is implemented, the government will transfer the subsidy of around Rs 435 per cylinder directly to consumers instead of giving it to oil companies and will transfer close to Rs 4,000 to every household annually to enable people to buy 9 cylinders of LPG at market price.

Although, about 32 crore Aadhaar cards have been issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India UIDAI, only 80 lakh bank accounts have been linked to the unique identity numbers so far. The finance ministry has already asked all the PSU banks to complete infrastructure network for direct transfers of cash subsidy to the final consumers under the scheme. The government pilot scheme for LPG subsidy transfer will cover 20 districts in the country by May 15.
