The production of aluminium in the country was lower by 16.5% and stood at 1.72 million tonnes (MT) in 2012-13 fiscal as against the target of 2.06 MT, as per report compiled by Department of Mines. The production is however 3% up as compared to 1.67 MT produced in 2011-12. The said target of 2.06 MT was not achieved due to various reasons. Non-availability of bauxite on time for some of the units has crippled production and falling global prices also contributed to non-achieving targets.

The major producers of the metal in the country include state-owned National Aluminium Company (NALCO) and private sector units - Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), Hindustan Aluminium Company (HINDALCO) and Vedanta Aluminium Company (VAL).

Till the time the global prices of the metal recover or availability of cheap domestic coal increases, NALCO will be operating its sole smelter at 75% capacity. Since May 2012, the 4.6 lakh tonne per annum capacity of the NALCO plant at Angul in eastern Odisha has been operating at a reduced capacity after its coal supplier Mahanadi Coalfields shut a mine following an accident on April 21.
