PM pushes for Centre-state co-operation to combat Naxalism

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the internal security meeting of Chief Ministers and said Centre and state governments must work together to combat Naxalism so that incidents like deadly Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh wont re-occur. Manmohan Singh also highlighted the steps being taken like enactment of several new laws, placing institutional mechanisms such as sensitization of policemen to ensure the security of women in the country.

Addressing the meet, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said more Centre-state co-operation in intelligence sharing has ensured improvement in the anti-Naxal efforts. He said the internal security situation in 2013 has been under control.

Some of the non-Congress chief ministers attending the meet have been opposing the formation of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) however it is reported that a new draft doesn't allow NCTC to function without the help of states. The chief ministers of seven Naxal-affected states will also meet the Home Minister in a separate meeting to discuss Naxal strategy. Non-congress chief ministers like West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa will not be attending the NCTC meet.
