Cotton crop output estimated 6% lower at 35.2 million bales: CAI

The cotton crop output is estimated lower at 35.2 million bales for the current cotton year (October- September) period, according to the report compiled by Cotton Association of India (CAI). In 2011-12 cotton crop was at 37.3 million bales. As per estimates by CAI the total supply is expected at 42.5 million bales. However, output in key growing areas of the north and central zone is expected to fall sharply.

The total cotton output in the northern zone including Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan is expected to drop leading to lower production at 5.4 million against 6.4 million bales registered last year. In the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the cotton production is estimated lower at 17.4 million bales. Production in Gujarat is estimated to fall to 8.5 million bales as farmers switched over to other crops for better price realization.

The mill consumption is estimated at 24 million bales compared to 21.7 million bales in 2011-12 and small scale unit demand is estimated at 2.2 million bales while that of non-mill demand is estimated unchanged at 1.6 million bales. The total demand is expected to touch 27.8 million bales excluding exports.
