Sterlite Industries’ copper smelter unit resumes operations

17 Jun 2013 Evaluate

Sterlite Industries’ copper smelter unit has resumed operations after the National Green Tribunal’s expert panel gave a green signal. The copper smelter unit was shut down over two months ago, after state-run Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) ordered the closure of the unit, due to sulphur dioxide allegedly leaked from the plant on March 23 and affected a large number of residents of Tuticorin.

On June 16, 2013, the panel members conducted its second phase of inspection and checked if the pollution monitoring equipment at the unit was working properly. Full-fledged working of the plant is expected to commence in a few days, maximum one week, when production would start.

Sterlite Industries (India) is India’s largest diversified metals and mining company. The company produces aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, silver, and commercial energy and has operations in India, Australia, Namibia, South Africa and Ireland.
