Holiday season boosts air travel; May air traffic witnesses positive growth

After 15 months of weak demand, the air travel witnessed a positive growth in the month of May, because of the holiday season. The season helped airlines to fill up more seats resulting in higher aircraft occupancy. As per the aviation regulator DGCA, most of the airlines reported good rise in passengers carried and altogether 57.1 lakh passengers were carried last month by domestic airlines, recording 5% growth compared with May 2012. Domestic airlines carried 259.98 lakh passengers during January to May as against 258.08 lakh of same period of last year.

IndiGo, the low-cost carrier again dominated its peers in May and carried 29.5% domestic passengers, while Jet Airways and JetLite together were at second spot and carried 22.5% of passengers. Spicejet, Air India and GoAir carried 19.8%, 19.2% and 9% respectively. IndiGo filled almost 90% of seats while GoAir, Air India and SpiceJet recorded at 86%, 81% and 82% respectively. Jet Airways and JetLite together filled 76% of seats.  Indigo also kept good record by having best on time performance (OTP) at 95%. OTP of SpiceJet was the worst at 85%.
