02 Jul 2013 Evaluate

The cotton farmers in some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra state have shifted to sowing of soyabeans while farmers in northern Karnataka have shifted to corn, as per the reports compiled by Indian Cotton Federation (ICF). On the other hand, in areas surrounding Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu state there was increase in sowing of cotton by 20% instead of rice due to scarcity of water during sowing for the Kuruvai crop. The federation would take another month to get a clear picture of the cotton sowing pattern and reasons to the shifting of crops.

On the price front, ICF (formerly South India Cotton Association) stated that lint prices are pulsating as sowing was progressing along with distribution of rains all over cotton sowing belts, particularly Northern and Central zones. On prospects of new crop, trade reports indicated a downward trend of cotton lint price.
