In order to attract the diamond industry, the Indian government has allowed export of small sized polished diamonds, and further to re-import these duty free, only after certification from authorised laboratories. According to the notification published by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), cut and polished diamonds of 0.10 carat or above can now be exported instead of the earlier norm of 0.25 carat and above.

According to the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council Chairman, Vipul Shah, it is cited as a welcomed move, as there is a huge demand for small sized diamonds in the international markets and that this will amplify exports of small diamonds which is the major demand from the industry. Further it will help the country to get a space in international market. During the period April 2012 and February 2013, the export has declined by 29% over the same period previous year. Hong Kong, the US, UAE, Israel and Belgium are the major export markets for India's cut and polished diamonds.
