President Pranab Mukherjee has signed the ordinance on food security after due consideration. Following the presidential consent, the bill would be now presented before the Parliament when it convenes for the Monsoon Session.
The government, in view of the upcoming general election decided to pass the food security bill through ordinance route. Promising subsidized food to two out of every three Indians or just about everyone who needs it, this plan was part of UPA government’s coalition manifesto in 2009 and, soon after returning to power, it promised that this would be implemented in its first 100 days in office.
About 67% of the country’s population will get benefit from this bill. Each person will get 5kg of food grain per month at a subsidized price of Rs.1 to Rs.3 per kg. The so-called poorest of poor households that fall under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana programme will continue to get 35kg of food grain per household per month. And states and union territories will continue to receive at least as much grain as they currently do from the centre.
