The country’s sugar production is projected to fall by 5% to 23.7 million tonnes (MT) in 2013-14 marketing year starting October. This could be due to a drought in the top producing state cut area under cane plantation. The production of sugar in India, which is also the world’s second largest producer and biggest consumer, is pegged at 25.2 MT in the 2012-13 marketing year (October-September) period. Further, it is estimated that Uttar Pradesh will have record high sugarcane acreage, while lower cane sowing has been witnessed in Maharashtra due to drought last year.

In a related development, as per reports compiled by the US Department of Agriculture, India’s sugar production is projected to fall by 8% to 23.2 million tonnes (MT) in 2013-14 marketing year starting October. Further, as per government data, area under sugarcane has decreased by 3% to 48.39 lakh hectares in the current season as against 50.04 lakh hectares in the same period of the previous year.
