Import of vegetable oil up at 9.47 lakh tonnes in June

The import of vegetable oil stood at 9.47 lakh tonnes last month a rise of 21% compared to 7.83 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period, as per report compiled by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India. The vegetable oil imports during November 2012-June 2013 rose 12% to 71.45 lakh tonnes compared to 63.95 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period. Oil year runs from November to October. The sharp rise in vegetable oil imports were largely due to increased demand for sunflower oil. Further, Sunflower oil imports were up by 15% at 1,01,480 tonnes against 87,859 tonnes in the corresponding period previous year.

The import of RBD palmolein was down at 2.96 lakh tonnes in June against 3.73 lakh tonnes in May due to reduction in duty difference between crude and refined palmolein in the exporting countries. As on July 01, 2013, the stocks of edible oil at various ports were estimated at 6.90 lakh tonnes and about 13.70 lakh tonnes are in the pipeline.

In the first eight months of 2012-13 oil year, palm oil imports increased to 57.53 lakh tonnes against 46.77 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period previous year. However, soft oils imports fell to 11.88 lakh tonnes from 15.79 lakh tonnes. India imports palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia and soyabean oil from Argentina and Brazil.
