The US markets ended mostly in red on Thursday.  After moving to the downside early in the session, markets regained ground over the course of the trading day on Thursday. The major averages climbed well off their early lows and spent much of the day lingering near the unchanged line. The early weakness on markets came as some traders cashed in on the recent strength in the markets. However, the Dow has closed higher for four straight sessions on the heels of a ten-day losing streak. Selling pressure waned shortly after the start of trading as many traders remained away from their desks following the Christmas Day holiday on Wednesday.

On the economic data front, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits unexpectedly edged slightly lower in the week ended December 21st. The report said initial jobless claims slipped to 219,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 220,000. Street had expected jobless claims to rise to 224,000. Meanwhile, the Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average crept up to 226,500, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 225,500. Continuing claims, a reading on the number of people receiving ongoing unemployment assistance, also climbed by 46,000 to 1.910 million in the week ended December 14th, reaching their highest level since November 2021.

Nasdaq fell 10.77 points or 0.05 percent to 20,020.36 and S&P 500 was down by 2.45 points or 0.04 percent to 6,037.59, while Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 28.77 points or 0.07 percent to 43,325.8.
