PMO to award 17 big infrastructure projects this fiscal

In a bid to fast-track infrastructure development, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is targeting to award at least 17 big infrastructure projects between September 2013 and March 2014. These key projects comprise sectors like railways, highways and power. In this regard, the first meeting of the steering group appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been held where the PMO has set deadlines to accomplish these projects to accelerate infrastructure investment. The deadlines will make sure that ministries/departments are clear about not just the overall deadline but also all the intermediate steps that need to be completed so that there are no slippages.

Meanwhile, the concerned committee will monitor the progress on the intermediate steps on a regular basis. For this, the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister has urged all ministries/ departments to appoint nodal officer who will be fully responsible for reporting progress of their department's projects on weekly basis.

In a meeting, it was decided that the project like Mumbai Rail Corridor, Navi Mumbai Airport, Loco Project, Delhi - Meerut Expressway, Mumbai- Vadodra Expressway and UMPPs - Cheyyar (TN) Bedabahal (Odisha) are to be award in 2014, while projects for Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Eastern Region transmission strengthening VI and VII, Southern system strengthening for import of power from Eastern region are to be awarded in 2013. Meanwhile, the Transmission system from Kudgi TPS (3x800 MW), Transmission system for connectivity of NCC power project and Baira Siul HEP - Sarna D/C line too would be awarded in 2013.

It was also decided in the meeting that Power Ministry, as per the decided deadlines, will try to award 13 identified transmission projects. The PMO's statement further said that in addition to Navi Mumbai, the Ministry of Civil Aviation will make efforts to move ahead on Goa (Mopa) airport as well.

Further, in terms of the Railways, it will be resolved within a week, if the financial bidding will be reissued or not for Mumbai Elevated Rail Corridor Project. Railways will also provide exact timelines on completion of the Khurja-Kanpur, Kanpur-Mughalsarai and Mughalsarai- Sonnagar stretches. With regard to the Ludhiana-Dadri stretch for which funding has yet to be fully tied up, the PMO said the Steering Group will review the matter in four weeks, after the committee on financing projects in Railways completes its work.
