M&M to roll out brand new SUV platform in two years: Report

19 Aug 2013 Evaluate

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), country’s major automobile maker, is reportedly set to launch a brand new SUV platform in two years time as the company facing a spurt in tractor sales riding on good monsoons amid slack in passenger vehicles sales in the first quarter of this fiscal. The new launches are critical for the passenger vehicle industry given that only new models have managed to buck the slowdown in the past 18 months.

Recently, M&M’s business conglomerate Reva Electric Vehicles rolled out Mahindra e2o, a zero-emission and fully automatic electric car, in Nepal. These electrical vehicles are now emerging as an alternative to fossil fuel-driven vehicles. Mahindra e2o is a fully automatic car that comes with a “Boost Mode” system for rapid acceleration.

The company reported its auto sales numbers for July 2013, which stood at 37,096 units, down by 21.17% as against 47,059 units during July 2012. While, Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) Farm Equipment Sector (FES), a part of the $16.2 billion Mahindra Group, achieved an impressive 12% growth in July 2013. Total tractor sales (domestic plus exports) in July 2013 stood at 18,469 units, as against 16,521 units for the same month last year.
