Asian markets trade mostly higher on Wednesday

Asian markets are trading mostly higher in cautious trade on Wednesday, following the mixed cues from Wall Street overnight, traders continue to pick up stocks at a bargain after heavy selling in the previous sessions. Traders remain cautious as uncertainty prevails over the size and the scope of new reciprocal tariffs on imports to the US to be announced later in the day. Trump is set to impose so-called reciprocal tariffs and other levies on what he has labeled ‘Liberation Day’ - a move expected to cover a broader swath of trade than the 1930 Smoot-Hawley duties that have long served as a cautionary tale about protectionism. Meanwhile, Indonesia remains closed for Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

Asian markets are trading mostly higher; Nikkei 225 surged 66.58 points or 0.19% to 35,691.06, Hang Seng advanced 14.99 points or 0.06% to 23,221.83, Shanghai Composite strengthened 7.97 points or 0.24% to 3,356.41 and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI up by 7.67 points or 0.51% to 1,521.32. On the other hand, Taiwan Weighted lost 14.97 points or 0.07% to 21,265.20, KOSPI dropped 14.73 points or 0.58% to 2,506.66 and Straits Times was down by 11.09 points or 0.28% to 3,957.76.
