Asian markets traded mostly lower in early deals on Wednesday, saddled by the thin holiday trading volumes with several markets closed for New Year's Eve. Lingering geopolitical tensions and ongoing concerns about China's economic weakness also trimmed equity investments. China's military drills near Taiwan created uncertainty, and technical stock sell offs also pressured local indices. Hang Seng slipped in the session. Albeit the benchmark index is on track for a second consecutive year of robust gains, climbed about 28% so far, buoyed by a robust IPO market in the city, easing US-China trade tensions, and Beijing’s pledge to sustain growth through proactive fiscal spending and accommodative monetary policy. Stock markets of Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia are closed for a market holiday observed for New Year's Eve.

Straits Times down by 9.17 points or 0.20% to 4,646.21, Hang Seng dipped by 272.60 points 1.07% to 25,582.00, Shanghai Composite dropped by 2.88 points or 0.07% to 3,962.24, and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI index narrowed by 11.11 points or 0.66% to 1,673.42.

On the flip side, Taiwan Weighted up by 295.60 points or 1.03% to 29,002.73.
