The consumption of finished steel, a key indicator to the health of an economy, registered growth of mere 0.8% at 36.58 million tonnes (MT) in the first half of the current fiscal, due to poor off-take by construction and automobile sectors. The country’s steel consumption stood at 36.28 MT steel during the April-September period of the last fiscal. On the flipside, country’s steel production grew by 6.2% at 40.3MT during the reporting period as against 38 MT during April-September,2012, data compiled by Joint Plant Committee (JPC), a unit of the Steel Ministry, has revealed.

Meanwhile, country’s import of steel during H12014 dropped by 25.2% to 2.9 MT against 3.9 MT a year earlier, at the same time, its exports too declined by 0.4% at 2.3 MT during April-September, 2013,.

Further, in a related development, the World Steel Association (WSA) in its Short Range Outlook (SRO) for 2013, cut India's steel demand projection to 3.4% for the current year from the earlier forecast of 5.9%, citing high inflation and structural problems as the factors constraining steel using sectors’ activities. Further, WSA has projected steel demand to grow by 5.4% in 2014 on hopes of accelerated attempts to implement structural reforms.
