India emerges as top third apparel and textile exporter to US market

Riding on the competitive advantage of a weak rupee, India has made it in list of top three apparel and textile exporters to US market during the first seven months of 2013, after being pushed out of the top five last year. The country’s textile and apparel exports to the American market stood at $3.73 billion during the first seven months of 2013, right after China and Vietnam, according to the US Department of Commerce's Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) data. Of the total textile and apparel exports of $3.73 billion, apparels alone accounted for over $2 billion, while the value of non-apparel exports (or home textiles) stood at $1.73 billion

Further while, the country registered 4% growth in export value during this period, it occupied the third position in terms of growth rate among top 10 textile and apparel suppliers to the US, with the first one being Vietnam's 13.5%, followed by Bangladesh's 9%.

Meanwhile, according to secretary general of industry body CITI (Confederation of Indian Textile Industry), DK Nair, the pick-up in sector’s performance, which is visible in the export of Indian apparel and textiles, is also reflected in revival of sorts in domestic sales.

With this revival, US is compelling India to do away with its export subsidies to textiles and garment producers as these sectors are now competitive in the global market. Thus with this growing pressure, the WTO may go slow in giving fresh subsidies to the sector.
