Indirect tax collection grows by 5.3% during April-October

In the first seven months of financial year, indirect tax collection comprising customs duty, excise duty and service tax, grew by 5.3% at Rs 2,69,100 crore as against Rs 2,56,125 crore during the same period a year ago. For the fiscal, the government has set indirect tax collection target of Rs 5.65 lakh crore, up from Rs 4.73 lakh crore in the last fiscal.

Collection of excise duty, which is levied on the production of goods, indicates that the index of industrial production (IIP), the factory output of the country, during the April-October period was Rs 89,600 crore, while realization from customs stood at Rs 98,000 crore. Further, Service tax collection, which has become a new focus area for revenue officials, stood at Rs 81,500 crore during the period.

For the month of October, Indirect tax collection, a reflection of production and trade activities in the country, grew by 7.4% at Rs 41,570 crore compared to Rs 38,712 crore during the same period of the last fiscal.
