GAIL's wholly owned subsidiary -- GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals (GMPL) has successfully commissioned 1.25 MTPA Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant located in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Karnataka. The plant was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals (JBPL), which subsequently underwent Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). In the year 2023, the company acquired JBPL through the CIRP, pursuant to the Resolution Plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and subsequently undertook extensive revival and refurbishment of the plant. The successful commissioning is the culmination of an extensive revival and refurbishment exercise undertaken by the company, involving significant engineering, technological and operational challenges.
PTA is a key raw material used in the manufacture of polyester fibre, yarn, PET resin and other polyester-based products, finding extensive applications in the textile, apparel and packaging industries. With an installed capacity of 1.25 million tons per annum, GMPL's facility represents a significant addition to India's domestic PTA manufacturing capacity and is expected to strengthen domestic availability of this critical raw material, reduce import dependence and support the growth of India's downstream polyester industry. Strategically located near New Mangalore Port, the plant is also supported by dedicated logistics infrastructure for efficient movement of raw materials and finished products. The company will market the product under the brand name 'G-Tex', leveraging its established marketing network and customer reach.
