The CPI-M stressed that corporate sector should be brought under the ambit of Lokpal in relation to government projects it undertakes. Participating in a debate in the Rajya Sabha, party leader Sitaram Yechury underscored that the bill was seeking to tackle the 'demand side' of corruption but not the supply side.
Yechury, quoting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's phrase on 'supply and demand side' from his speeches concerning economy and inflation, stressed that the Lokpal bill should cover cases where a corporate entity influenced government policy through corrupt means and asked whether a government contract acquired by a corporate through corrupt means be kept out of Lokpal.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist leader mentioned that it was 'a serious lacuna' in the bill and repeated that public private partnership (PPP) projects should be under the ambit of Lokpal.
