Minimum export price on onions cut to $150 a tonne

27 Dec 2013 Evaluate

The minimum export price (MEP) of onions has been reduced by more than half to $150 a tonne from $350 per tonne in order to encourage overseas shipments amid a crash in local wholesale prices and protests by farmers. The decision was taken after reviewing the situation of arrivals in the producing and major consuming mandies, retail and wholesale modal rates as well as foreign trade scenario.

A meeting between the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister for Commerce was held on December 25 to discuss issues related to the sharp decline in wholesale onion prices in Maharashtra and the need to review the MEP where the said decision was taken.

It was also decided that the secretaries of Departments of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Agriculture/ Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) on onions will regularly and closely monitor the arrivals, wholesale modal prices and retail prices of onions in the country. The government will make appropriate interventions in future as and when required to ensure price stability for consumers and adequate domestic availability of onions along with price protection for farmers with a view to balance the interests of both farmers and domestic consumers.
