The turnover of the commodity bourses stood at Rs 82.46 lakh crore till December of the ongoing fiscal, a drop of 36.38% compared to Rs 129.6 lakh crore recorded in the year-ago period. Since the imposition of commodity transaction tax from July 2013, the business turnover has shown a decline in most of the 17 commodity bourses. The other factor which has attributed to the slowdown is around Rs 5,500 crore payment crisis at spot exchange NSEL. The national level bourses -- MCX, NCDEX, NMCE, ICEX, UCX and ACE have seen a large fall in business turnover.
The turnover from bullion fell by 39.45% to Rs 36.34 lakh crore during April-December period of 2013-14 fiscal, from Rs 60 lakh crore in the year-ago period, according to latest data released by the Forward Markets Commission (FMC).
The business from energy items dropped by 30% and stood at Rs 19.85 lakh crore from Rs 28.56 lakh crore, while the turnover from metals declined by 39% and stood at Rs 14.72 lakh crore from Rs 24 lakh crore in the review period.
Similarly, the turnover from farm items came down by 33% to Rs 11.54 lakh crore in April-December of this fiscal, from Rs 17.12 lakh crore in the year-ago period.
