05 Dec 2011 Evaluate

After the 10 days altercation during the ongoing winter session in both the houses, the government has come to a conclusion to put on hold its highly-debated decision of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail till a consensus is reached among political parties. However, opposition BJP’s leaders Sushma Swaraj and LK Advani has asked for a 'rollback,' not a 'holdback.' The suspension of the government's policy comes after ally Mamata Banerjee made it clear that she cannot support the government on FDI in retail.

The winter session began on November 22, 2011 has hardly seen any business due to constant ruckus over various issues including Telangana, price rise, however, entry of FDI in retail was the major one. About Rs 22 crore are lost due to non-functioning of Parliament, also smooth functioning of this session is significant as 32 Bills will be passed including highly-publicized Lokpal Bill.

The announcement of placing FDI in retail on hold has discouraged the retail stocks which were trading with huge cuts against their euphoric mood when the decision was adjudged.

In the meantime, social crusader Anna Hazare’s Team has invited leaders of all political parties at Jantar Mantar Dec 11 to speak on the Lokpal bill. 'Dec 11th, Jantar Mantar debate with no adjournments on Lokpal. Come+listen+Ask Qs (questions) & clarify doubts. Political reps (representatives) are invited to speak,' Bedi said.
