ATE seeks Rs 8000 crore recovery roadmap for Delhi discoms

12 Mar 2014 Evaluate
After all the uproar over power discoms allegedly ripping off consumers in Delhi by its former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal , customers in Delhi are set to pay higher as Appellate Tribunal of Electricity (ATE) has asked the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) and private power distribution companies in the city to lay out a roadmap for liquidation of “regulatory assets” worth up to Rs 8,000 crore. The commission had in the last week proposed a road map for payment of Rs 8,000 crore and interest to the three discoms run by Reliance and Tata.

The directive came on petition filed by the two discoms which supply power in nearly 70% areas in the city. Reliance Infrastructure-owned BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) and BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) supply power to over city's 3.2 million consumers, while Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL) caters to the rest in the area.
In yet another positive development for these companies, the tribunal recalled last month’s directive that restrained DERC from taking any “coercive action” against BSES discoms like suspension of their licenses without its approval.

According to the tribunal, DERC shall again discuss upon matter with Delhi government for early decision on the financial restructuring of the discoms to minimize the burden on the consumers on account of increase in retail supply tariff due to liquidation of the regulatory assets.
