Performance Overview

  • POWERGRID reported a broadly stable quarter with marginal 1% YoY decline in revenue, mainly due to lower Other Income and Consultancy volatility. Core transmission revenue remained resilient, supported by consistent availability (99.83%) and regulated tariff visibility.

  •  EBITDA declined 6% YoY as operating expenses rose 32% YoY. PAT fell 6% YoY, reflecting lower incentives and JV contribution.

  • Capex execution remained strong with Rs. 4,587 crore capitalized in H1 and a robust Rs. 1.52 lakh crore execution pipeline across Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) and Regulated Tariff Mechanism (RTM) projects. 

  • Works-in-hand continue to scale at a 22% CAGR. Billing and collection efficiency remained excellent at 102.7% with improving dues.

Business Segments

1. Transmission (Core Business)

  • Transmission remains POWERGRID’s primary earnings driver, generating Rs. 10,736 crore in Q2 FY26 (-1% YoY) with exceptional 99.83% system availability, ensuring full incentive recovery. 

  • The network spans 1,81,054 km lines, 287 substations, and 5,82,516 MegaVolt-Ampere (MVA) capacity the world’s largest 765 kV network. A robust Rs. 1.52 lakh crore works-in-hand pipeline across TBCB (68%) and RTM (32%) projects provides strong multi-year regulated return visibility.

2. Telecom

  • Telecom leverages POWERGRID’s ~1,00,000 km fibre backbone with 100% backbone availability. H1 FY26 revenue increased to Rs. 570 crore from Rs. 544 crore YoY. Q2 saw Rs. 84 crore of new orders and 22 customers added, including 4×400G links for a global OTT player. 

  • The segment remains asset-light, recurring and enhances utilisation of the national transmission fibre network. 

3. Consultancy (incl. Smart Metering)

  • Consultancy surged with H1 FY26 revenue rising to Rs. 821 crore from Rs. 255 crore YoY, driven by Rs. 484 crore smart metering business (PESL). POWERGRID now operates in 25 countries, with 15 new domestic orders, 3 new international orders, and 81 ongoing domestic with 14 ongoing global projects.

  •  Opportunities span Renewable evacuation, intra-state systems, Battery Energy Storage System, diversions and green hydrogen, offering high-margin, asset-light growth.

Capex Outlook

  • POWERGRID executed Rs. 15,385 crore capex in H1 FY26 and capitalised Rs. 4,587 crore. FY26 capex commitment stands at Rs. 28,000 crore, comprising Rs. 19,062 crore TBCB, Rs. 3,554 crore RTM, and Rs. 5,384 crore others. 

  •  With Rs. 1.52 lakh crore works-in-hand and rising TBCB wins, management guides for a sustained Rs. 28,000–30,000 crore annual capex cycle, supporting strong regulated-asset growth.
