About Trent Ltd

Trent Limited was originally incorporated as Lakme Limited (Lakme) on December 5, 1952. Lakme was in the business of manufacturing, sale and export of cosmetics, toiletries and perfumery products. In 1998, Lakme decided to divest from its cosmetics business and decided to pursue the field of apparel retailing, given the absence of established brands in most categories. It was decided that Lakme would establish a strong presence in the apparel and soft goods retailing market by opening a chain of departmental stores across the country.

Towards this end, in March 1998, Lakme acquired Littlewoods International (India) Private Limited (LIIPL) from Littlewoods International Limited, U.K. LIIPL was in the business of retailing of readymade garments and related merchandise. In parallel, with effect from January 1, 1998, Lakme Exports Limited, a subsidiary of Lakme, was amalgamated with LIIPL and the merged entity was named as Trent Limited. Subsequently, with effect from July 1, 1998, Trent Limited was amalgamated with Lakme, and the name of Lakme Limited was changed to Trent Limited.

Trent is one of the leading players in the branded lifestyle space in India. It owns and operates multiple brands that bring quality, affordability, and enhanced customer experience to a diverse consumer audience. Its key concepts in the fashion space include Westside, Zudio and Samoh, and in the food and grocery space, it operates under the Star banner.

Business area of the company

The company is engaged in retailing / trading of apparels, footwear, accessories, etc. It operates through ‘Westside’, ‘Zudio’, ‘Utsa’ and ‘Samoh’ retail formats. Westside - Trent’s flagship format offers apparel, footwear and accessories for men, women and children, along with furnishings, decor and a range of home accessories. Operating with a predominantly exclusive brands model, Westside continues to demonstrate the ability to compete effectively in the market place. Zudio is a value retail format catering to apparels and footwear for men, women and children. Utsa is a modern Indian lifestyle format which offers ethnic apparel, beauty products and accessories. Samoh offers luxurious occasion and ethnic wear for men and women.

It offers a differentiated portfolio of exclusive in-house-designed brands that are in sync with the latest fashion trends, appealing to a wide spectrum of style-conscious consumers across defined customer segments. Westside has stores across cities with additional online reach across India exclusively through Westside.com, Tata Cliq and Tata Neu.

Zudio: Trent’s value-fashion concept - Zudio - is anchored around accessibility. It offers function and fashion at irresistible prices for women, men and children. The exclusive offerings are curated in-house and made available at very sharp price points. Zudio has evolved into a rapidly growing concept that appeals to all with a deep commitment to being accessible across facets - fashion, reach and lifestyle. Zudio stores are present in attractive and prominent locations, and aim to offer an exciting shopping experience for customers.

Utsa: It is a modern Indian woman’s lifestyle destination. The Utsa store is curated to be a portal of discovery - curating the best of Westside's apparel, footwear, innerwear, beauty and accessories, appealing to the creative, discerning and aspiring woman.

SAMOH: It is an elevated and differentiated occasional wear concept that focuses on elegant, expressive, modern silhouettes that emphasise versatility. With premium fabrics, intricate designs, and attention to detail, SAMOH aims to be the go-to brand for customers looking for occasion wear that is both stylish and timeless and provide a compelling touch of luxury and sophistication to its customers while they shop for their special moments. SAMOH caters to those who appreciate luxurious and modern takes on cherished designs and motifs from the Indian hinterland. SAMOH’s range draws inspiration from traditional roots and blends it seamlessly with modern aesthetics.

Food & grocery:

Star: This supermarket concept operating under the “Star” banner offers a curated assortment of products including FMCG, staples, and a comprehensive fresh offering (vegetables, fruits, dairy & non-vegetarian products). The offering is also supported by a compelling range of its exclusive retail brands at attractive prices. The Star format has increasingly evolved into a sustainable model with growing sales densities and repeat customers. Star stores are primarily operated by Trent Hypermarket Private Limited (THPL) - a 50:50 joint venture between Trent Ltd. and Tesco Plc UK.

Booker: The company operates cash and carry stores under the Booker Wholesale banner. Booker Wholesale focuses on categories and assortments relevant to small businesses, which include products in categories across staples, processed foods, confectionery, personal care, home care, soft drinks, dairy, etc. The concept serves kirana stores, traders, wholesalers, small businesses, hotels, restaurants and caterers.

Milestones
  • 2004 - The company ventured in hypermarket business with Star Bazaar. This outlet is currently located in 3 cities namely Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bangalore. It offers wide range of products affordable prices such as at staple foods, beverages, health and beauty products, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, consumer electronics and household items.
  • 2008 - Trent announced an association with Tesco Plc, the UK’s leading retailer and one of the world’s top three leading international retailers. This arrangement will allow Trent access to Tesco’s extensive retail expertise and technical capability including world class IT systems, processes and best practices in functions like marketing, stock management, retail information systems, cold-chain infrastructure and front-end services to drive the growth of Trent’s hypermarket business, which is operated under the name Star Bazaar.
  • 2009 - Trent announced a joint venture with Inditex Group to develop and promote Zara stores in India. Inditex is one of the world’s biggest fashion retailers from Spain.In the MoU signed, Inditex would hold 51 per cent while Trent would hold a 49 per cent stake in the joint venture company.
  • 2013 - The Board of Directors of the Company approved a Scheme of Amalgamation and Arrangement (‘The Scheme’) between Landmark Limited, Fiora Link Road Properties Limited and Trexa ADMC Private Limited with the Company.
  • 2014 - Trent's westside opens stores at 'Sun City' Jodhpur, 5th Store at Bengaluru, 9th store in Borivali and 5th Store in Chennai during the year.
  • 2014 - One of India’s largest and fastest growing chain of retail stores,Trent's Westside announced the launch of private label teen fashion brand ‘Y&F ' Young and Free’.
  • 2017 - Trent had acquired value fashion apparel business ‘Zudio’ from Trent Hypermarket Private Limited (THPL).
  • 2019 - The company has acquired 51% of the share capital of Booker India Limited (BIL) thereby making it a subsidiary of the Company with effect from 28th September 2019.
  • 2020 - Trent has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of the share capital of Common Wealth Developers.
  • 2020: Westside also launched its revamped website in FY20.
