About Jenson & Nicholson (India) Ltd

Jenson & Nicholson, a leading paint company in the country today, was established in the year 1922. It has a countrywide presence with 33 branches and stock points across the country and manufacturing plants at Naihati (near Calcutta), Sikandrabad (near Delhi) and Panvel (near Mumbai).

The company reinvented itself as a completely Indian company in 1973 when the foreign holding was bought over by S P Sinha, an industrialist with interest in cement and hotels. Jenson & Nicholson manufactures almost every type of paint for the decorative and industrial customers.

Business offerings of the company:

  • The Industrial Coatings Division (ICD) of Jenson & Nicholson offers specialised products and consultancy services to its esteemed clients. Free consultancy is provided to industrial customers for their OE, maintenances or protective requirements and tailor made products as per specifications are developed.The division offers specialised products like powder coatings which find wide application with major OEMs like Whirpool, Godrej and Electrolux.
  • The Steel Guard division is committed to protect various structures from corrosion. The major customers are petroleum Refineries like IOCL, Reliance Petroleum, steel plants and chemical plants.
  • The Industrial Division offers specialised products in liquid paints to major OEMs like Telco, Bajaj together with general industrial finishes for cycles, cylinders fans and other ancilliary industries.

Milestones:

  • 1922: Jenson & Nicholson was established in India in the year 1922 by its parent company Berger - Jenson & Nicholson Ltd, UK. 
  • 1925: Commercial production started at the company’s first factory at Naihati, West Bengal.
  • 1953: J&N was converted into a public limited company
  • 1955: Launches India’s first plastic emulsion paint, under the brand name of 'Robbialac'.
  • 1964: The company expands its production facilities through a second factory at Panvel, Maharashtra.
  • 1973: Foreign holding of Jenson & Nicholson bought over by S P Sinha. 
  • 1981: J&N diversifies into high technology industrial electronics business through technical collaboration with Carl Schenck AG of Germany, manufacturing Inmotion weighing systems and process control equipment. Soon a new company Schenck J&N is to be formed in order to service this sector more effectively.  
  • 1986: Jenson ventures into the powder coatings market, thus becoming the first company in the organised sector to offer this extremely environment friendly coating technology. 
  • 1989: A 50-50% JV of J&N (I) Ltd. and Carl Schenck AG. Darmstadt, Germany. 
  • 1993: Third factory with the highest level of automation and state of the art technology set up at Sikandrabad, close to Delhi. 
  • 1995: J&N introduces Instacolor, in technical collaboration with Tikkurilla OY of Finland. It is the first company in the country to introduce computerised dispensing systems.  The 'Standox' brand of products offers over 45,000 colours to the Indian car owner. 
  • 1996: J & N's Sikandrabad factory acquires ISO 9002 certification.
  • 1997: The company, in order to cater to highly specialized marine paints sector, entered into a 50:50 joint venture project with Chugoku Marine Paints of Japan. Chugoku is the second largest supplier of marine paints in the world with 30% market share. The new company also is handles heavy duty coatings along with marine paints.
