Milestones and major achievements

  • 1924: Thomas Bata came to India to source rubber and leather for his footwear factories. Realized that out of the 350 million population, only about 10 million wore footwear; decided to manufacture affordable footwear.
  • 1931: First workshop of Bata shoe Company was set up in Konnagar, on the West bank of the Hooghly River. The company rented a building and started an experimental shoe production with 75 experts from Czechoslovakia. 
  • 1932: Thomas Bata makes his second visit to India; decides to build a town, Batanagar, in Bengal.
  • 1933: There were 86 Bata shops, each selling an average of 40 pairs weekly.
  • 1934: Started manufacturing unit at Batanagar..
  • 1936: Bata Tennis, the pinstriped sneaker with the distinctive rubber toe guard, was created for Indian school children. Tennis went on to become one of the best-selling shoes of all time, and is still sold around the world.
  • 1942: Sets up a factory in Patna, Bihar; it came to be known as ‘Bataganj’.
  • 1952: Sets up another manufacturing unit in Faridabad, Haryana.
  • 1955: Produced 48 lakh pairs of leather footwear and 1.4 crore pairs of rubber footwear.
  • 1960: Had 779 stores; produced 2.4 crore pairs of shoes.
  • 1970: Power, North Star, Bubble Gummers and Marie Claire were added to the portfolio. 
  • 1973: Went public and changed name to Bata India.
  • 1999: Signed Bollywood actor Rani Mukherjee as brand ambassador.
  • 2009: Opened 69 new Bata stores in large format, each with an average of over 3000 square feet.
  • 2017-18: Revamped its image as a vibrant brand to tap into millennials.
  • 2017-18: Roped in Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon as the face of the brand and launched ‘Surprisingly Bata’ campaign.
  • 2017-18: Launched ‘Red’ carpet store format in India; opened BubbleGummers and Bata Women stores.
