Vindhya Telelinks, which manufactures telephone cables in collaboration with Sweden’s Ericsson Cables is set to bag a 7,582-crore contract from BSNL to build an optic fibre cable network for India’s armed forces.
Vindhya Telelinks, along with its consortium partners — Telecommunications Consultants India (TCIL) and Aster — has emerged as the lowest bidder for this defence project, whose execution will be overseen by BSNL. This order is over 20 times the annual sales of Vindhya Telelinks for the fiscal ‘09-10. Following the completion of this project by 2012-end, the armed forces will use this alternate network for a bulk of their communication requirements and vacate additional frequencies to be used for commercial telephony.
