BHEL sets up 28 MW Nyaborongo-1 hydro electric power plant in Rwanda

Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has successfully constructed and commissioned the 2x14 MW hydro power project in the African Region. Nyaborongo- I hydro power plant is located in Muhanga District in the Southern Province of Rwanda. The project is owned by the Govt. of Rwanda and has been jointly financed under the Govt. of India’s Line of Credit and Govt. of Rwanda’s own funds. The project has been built by the Govt. of Rwanda under its plan of providing electricity to 70% of the population by 2017 from the current levels of just 17%.

The company’s scope of work for the Nyaborongo-I project included design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of the complete hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical packages. The company has contracted over 28,000 MW of hydro-electric plants across the globe. BHEL has the capability to deliver complete hydro power plants including design, engineering, supply/logistics and erection & commissioning. Hydro turbines in the range of 100 kW upwards and up to 300,000 kW unit sizes of various impeller types namely Francis, Kaplan, Pelton and also Reversible and Pump Turbines along with matching generators are designed, engineered, manufactured and tested at BHEL’s own manufacturing plants.

BHEL’s hydro installations are working in India, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand and Vietnam. The company is also currently executing Hydro power projects in Afghanistan, DR Congo and Bhutan.
