Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has bagged Rs 3,150 crore order for setting up of green-field 2X600 MW Malwa Thermal Power Project (TPP) in Madhya Pradesh. The contract was bagged from Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company (MPPGCL), and it involves supply of two new-rating units of 600 MW each.

600 MW rating units is a new trend in India, which was traditionally obsessed with sub-critical 500 MW rating units. While BHEL is undisputed leader in 500 MW sub-critical units the company recently only has got into design engineering of sub-critical units of 600 MW ratings and even in that it has bagged quite some impressive orders under stiff competition.

BHEL’s order intake improved by 5% to Rs 15,200 crore in the quarter ended December 2008 despite slowdown in the global and domestic economy. Also, its order backlog as end of Dec 2008 was a strong Rs 113,500 crore. Earlier in Feb 2009 the company has bagged four orders from NTPC, NLC-TN Power, MAHAGENCO aggregating to Rs 7,000 crore in value for supply and installation of main plant equipment for thermal power plants with a cumulative capacity of 3,250 MW in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

The company is currently having a manufacturing capacity of 10,000 MW per annum.  It is in the process of being expanded by 50% to 15,000 MW per annum by December 2009. Based on the orders on hand, its tentative delivery and commissioning schedule is 6,000 MW in 2008-09; 7,000 MW in 2009-10; 15,500 MW in 2010-11 and around 10,000-12,000 MW in 20011-12.  Thus the current capacity is more than sufficient in respect of orders to be executed upto early 2011, while expansions will sufficiently take care of increased demand / orders in 2011 and 2012.
