Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys has commissioned the first unit of its two 60 MW captive power units at Choudwar, Odisha. The company currently has an existing capacity of 138 MW and the recent addition will raise it up to 198 MW. The total cost of the power plant is Rs 600 crore.

The power from plant will be used for IMFA’s production requirement while in short term bases there would be surplus of 50 MW, which would be fed to the grid. Further, in the long run, plans are to increase smelting capacity and utilize the entire generation.

Power fed to the grid at Choudwar would help stabilize system parameters in the area, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The plant’s boiler and pollution control equipment are imported from Thermax, while the turbine and generator are from China.

Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys is primarily involved in the production of ferro alloys including charge-chrome (high-carbon ferro-chrome), and has an installed furnace capacity of 157 MVA in its two units in Therubali and Choudwar2 districts of Orissa. The company’s operations are supported by a 108 MW captive thermal power plant (at Choudwar) and captive chromite mines.
