Reliance and Tata’s Partner with NVIDIA to Elevate India’s AI Capabilities

NVIDIA, a global leader in the supply of artificial intelligence hardware and software has made a significant stride towards increasing India’s artificial intelligence capabilities by announcing strategic partnerships with Reliance Industries and Tata Group companies (TCS, Tata Communications & Tata Motors). This collaboration is aimed to harness the potential of AI and offer cutting-edge capabilities to organizations, businesses, researchers, and startups in India.

Partnership with the Tata’s

With the partnership, NVIDIA and Tata Group companies are set to create a powerful AI supercomputer leveraging NVIDIA’s GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip. This collaboration seeks to achieve top-tier performance in the AI field and make advanced AI technology accessible on a broad scale. Moreover, TCS intends to utilize this partnership to foster innovation and enhance the skills of its extensive workforce (6 lakh+ employees).

NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, highlighted the global race in generative AI and the shift to GPU computing in data centers to meet the rising demand for AI applications.

This partnership marks a continuation of NVIDIA’s successful collaboration with the Tata Group, as witnessed last year with Jaguar Land Rover’s multi-year strategic partnership with NVIDIA, focused on developing automated driving systems and AI-enabled services.

Partnership with Reliance

To further strengthen India’s position in the AI landscape, NVIDIA has also joined forces with Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani. This collaboration aims to develop India’s foundational large language model tailored for generative AI applications. The model will be trained on India’s diverse languages, catering to the country’s needs while serving a global audience.

In a separate announcement, Jio Platforms Limited, part of Reliance Industries, unveiled plans to build an advanced cloud-based AI compute infrastructure in partnership with NVIDIA. This initiative aims to accelerate India’s growth as a prominent player in artificial intelligence. The AI cloud infrastructure will provide researchers, developers, startups, scientists, and AI practitioners with accelerated computing and secure cloud networking capabilities, enhancing various AI projects, including drug discovery, climate research, and AI chatbots.

NVIDIA will provide Jio Platforms with end-to-end AI supercomputer technologies, encompassing CPUs, GPUs, networking solutions, AI operating systems and frameworks. Jio will oversee the management and maintenance of the AI cloud infrastructure and engage with customers.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman & Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership, highlighting its potential to drive accelerated growth in India’s technology infrastructure, much like Jio did for the nation’s digital revolution.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, praised India’s scale, data, and talent, envisioning the creation of large language models that will power generative AI applications for the people of India.

These partnerships signify a significant step towards realizing India’s potential as an AI ecosystem, fostering innovation, research, and development in the field of artificial intelligence. This will have long-term positive implications in the Indian Technology space. The segment is still in a nascent stage for India as of now and it is to be seen how successful these business houses are in capturing the immense potential this space has to offer.
