Jindal Steel and Power to start importing coal from Mozambique mine: Report

Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) is reportedly all set to start importing coal from its Mozambique mine, where production will begin this year. The plant in Mozambique will produce coking coal as well as thermal coal, which is suitable for power plants.

Naveen Jindal-led company plans to import about 500,000 tonnes of coking coal from the African nation in 2013. Coking coal is one of the essential ingredients for producing steel. The company currently imports about 1 million tonnes (mt) of coal to meet the demand of its steel plants.

The company has recently secured an order worth Rs 500 crore from the Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) to supply of 80,000 tonnes of steel. Power Grid will use this steel for setting up two transmission towers in Southern India. The company bagged the order on emerging as the lowest bidder.
