How to pick best growth stocks?

Check Now!

Some of the advantages of investing in mid cap stocks are:

  • High Growth, high return – You can hope to find faster growing companies aided by growing industries. When chosen correctly they can provide a great stimulus to your portfolio return.
  • Underfollowed – Usually these companies have less analyst and investor following, allowing smart investors to grow their investment quickly.
  • Low liquidity, High Risk - Though they are less risky than small cap investments, they are still risky investments. They can fall as fast as they have risen up on a single negative sentiment. The low liquidity in some cases, will worsen the fall.

Mid Cap Stocks FAQs

Mid cap companies as the name indicates, fall right in the middle, between large and small cap companies. At present, companies with a market capitalisation between Rs. 5,000 crore and Rs. 20,000 crore are considered as mid cap companies.

The appealing feature of mid cap companies as far as investors are concerned is that they offer higher growth as compared to large cap stocks and lower volatility than small cap stocks. Mid cap stocks provide a good diversification to an investor’s portfolio.

NIFTY Mid Cap 100, launched on April 1, 2006 is an index that captures the price of movement of 100 best mid cap stock companies listed on the National Stock Exchange representing the mid cap segment of the market.

The NIFTY Mid Cap 100 Index has all companies from NIFTY Mid Cap 50 and the remaining 50 stocks are taken from the NIFTY Mid Cap 150 Index based on the average daily turnover in the index. A few important points of the index are:

  1. Free-float market capitalisation method is used to calculate the NIFTY Mid Cap 100 Index
  2. The base date is April 1, 2005 and base value is 1000.
  3. Calculation frequency is on a daily basis and the index re-balancing is done semi-annually.
The benefits of investing in companies that are a part of the mid cap stocks list are:
  • Mid caps have a lower risk and volatility when compared to small cap funds, but a higher growth potential than large cap stocks.
  • They are underfollowed in stock markets as compared to large cap stocks, giving a huge opportunity to investors to uncover hidden opportunities. If chosen well, and the stock grows rapidly, its share price will get a further boost as mutual funds and institutional investors eventually take notice.
  • Mid cap stocks most often outperform large caps in bull markets, as they have more growth potential from opportunities that emerge during strong economies. Because of this, a mid-cap stock can grow into a large-cap stock if the business performs well.
The process of choosing best mid cap stocks for investment does not entirely differ from that involved in choosing other stocks. You can follow the simple approach mentioned in our investment guide here.

It does, however, warrant extra caution (like a higher margin of safety) due to the higher risk you take by investing in small cap companies.

Mid cap stocks are considered to be more risky than large cap stocks by virtue of being more volatile. Though this in itself is not a problem, this makes midcaps unsuitable for people with conservative/moderate risk profiles.

Mid-cap stocks are more at risk during downturns. They simply don't have the same resources as larger companies. Example, they can't borrow money as easily as big companies, don't have as much cash on hand, and are more likely to have negative cash flow. Therefore, they have a greater chance of going bankrupt during a market crash.

However, they also have a higher growth potential and often outperform large caps in bull markets.

You can use different criterias to arrive at the list of best stocks in the Mid Cap company index. You can use return ratios like ROCE or ROE, that will help you choose companies with profitable growth.

Based on ROE, the best stocks in the Mid Cap companies index are:
