Punjab, Haryana collectively procures 155 lakh tonnes of paddy

The food grain states of Punjab and Haryana have moved towards another bumper crop season as both have collectively procured nearly 155 lakh tonnes of paddy this season. Out of the total 155 lakh tonnes procured, the state of Punjab has procured nearly 115 lakh tonnes paddy while Haryana has procured nearly 40 lakh tonnes. The procurement of nearly 40 lakh tonnes so far in Haryana is higher compared to 33.46 lakh tonnes procured in the corresponding period last year.

The government agencies have procured the bulk of the paddy which accounts to nearly 99% while the rest has been procured by private millers in both states. The district of Ludhiana, Sangrur and Patiala were leading in paddy procurement in Punjab while Kurukshetra, Karnal and Kaithal were leading district in procurement in Haryana. The state government has set up 1,770 procurement centres in Punjab.

Starting from October 01, 2012, the farmers in the Punjab state have received a total payment of nearly Rs 11,000 crore this season. Though procurement of paddy in both the states started from October 01 but the bulk of the stocks have started arriving only after October 10. The government has fixed the minimum support price (MSP) this time at Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,280 per quintal, respectively, for common and grade-A varieties of paddy.
